As a theoretical astrophysicist his main interests are the dynamics of supersonic flows around stars and gas ejected from compact objects like black holes and interacting binary stars. Throughout his career he has focused on developing computational methods that translate complex physical models into a form that can be compared directly with observation. This work has lead to the introduction of interactive computer graphics methods into astrophysical modelling (Shape software).
During his sabbatical year at the TU Braunschweig he works with members of the Computer Graphics Institute on new methods of real-time volume editing and procedural structure modelling for astrophysical and other applications.
He studied at the National University of Asuncion in Paraguay and the University of Bonn, Germany, where he obtained his Physik-Diplom (1992) and PhD (1994). His thesis work was done at the Max-Planck-Institute for Radioastronomy on the kinematics of relativistic jets. From 1994 to 1998 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of The University of Manchester, UK. In 1998 he went to the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, as a Professor of Physics and since 2002 he is Professor of Astrophysics at the Institute for Astronomy (UNAM) in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. In 2011 he received the F.W. Bessel Award from the A. v. Humboldt Foundation. Since July 2011 he has been on sabbatical at the Institute for Computer Graphics at the TU Braunschweig as a visiting researcher.
